Debbie Baker Robinson

President
Debbie Baker Robinson brings passion and dedication to her new role as President of the Band of the Hour Association. She marched in the UM band from 1978 to 1983 where she played clarinet, served as a section leader, and then as Assistant Drum Major. A member of Tau Beta Sigma and president of the little sisters of Phi Mu Alpha, Debbie graduated in 1984 with a BBA degree in CIS/ACC. As President of BOTHA, she looks to reignite the passion of all those whose lives have been touched by the Band of the Hour, and to engage them in worthwhile and fun activities that promote student and alumni participation in the UM Band of the Hour.

Jim Schmelzer

President Elect & Membership Chair
Jim Schmelzer has been elected President of the Band of the Hour Association for Fiscal Year 2018 with his term starting in June of 2018.  Jim is the owner of Big Note Music and Mobile Instrument Repair, located in Atlanta GA and Raleigh NC.  The business provides same-day, on-site mobile band instrument repair services to local school band programs.  Jim was a member of the Band of the Hour, from 1984-1988.  He was a mellophone section leader, and drum major for two seasons.  Jim and his wife Cindy (Cindy was in the band as well) have a strong connection to the band because they met at the Fiesta Bowl, in 1985.  

Debbie Zwolinski

Secretary
Deborah Zwolinski was a member of the Band of the Hour from 1980 to 1985 where she played alto saxophone and sousaphone. A member of Tau Beta Sigma, Sigma Alpha Iota, and a Phi Mu Alpha little sister, Deborah graduated from the U in 1985 with a BM degree in Music Merchandising. Deborah is delighted to serve as Secretary of the Band of the Hour Association. The time she spent as a member of the Band of the Hour provided so many great and memorable experiences. She believes that through the efforts of BOTHA new and memorable experience for both current students and alumni will be fostered. There’s no power like the Band of the Hour.

Augie Silva

Treasurer
August (Augie) Silva currently serves as Treasurer for the BOTHA. He earned both his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from the University of Miami. He and his wife Donna have five children. While at the University he performed in the Band of Hour for four years playing alto saxophone and clarinet. He served as section leader and was a member Phi Mu Alpha. He received his BM in 1964 and MM in 1973. Augie's participation with the BOTHA is a result of wanting to foster the Band of the Hour, and show his appreciation to the University of Miami and the Band of the Hour for the music and band scholarship that allowed him to receive a quality college education.

Nancy Rosenberg

Historian
Nancy Rosenberg brings over 10 years of experience as a member of the Band of the Hour Association as member-at-large, secretary, and now as historian. She spent 3 years as a member of the band at UM playing the clarinet. After graduating in 1976, she began teaching music in a public elementary, a job she held until her recent retirement after 35 years. She also received a Master of Music in 1983. Nancy lives in Miami with her husband Michael. She has 2 daughters, and 2 grandchildren. She is an active member of the Greater Miami Symphonic Band, in which she also holds a board position. Nancy looks forward to helping the Band of the Hour Association in any way that she is needed.

Joe Bagierek

Past President
Joe Bagierek earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Business & Entertainment Industries (2003) from the Frost School of Music as well as Master of Business Administration degree from the School of Business (2007). Joe was a 4 year member of the Band of the Hour in which he marched in the drum-line and played drums in both women's and men's basketball bands. He has held offices of Band Captain an Executive Officer during his tenure with the band. He has served on the Alumni Council for the University of Miami and is a member of the School of Business Mentor program. Joe is a member of Tau Beta Sigma and was honored as a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Motor Board.

Jay Rees

Director of the Frost School, Band of the Hour
B.M. ’84, Jazz Performance & Music Education

Jay Rees is professor of music and director of athletic bands at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. His responsibilities include leading the Frost Band of the Hour, the marching and pep bands of the University of Miami, at UM sporting events such as nationally televised Miami Hurricanes football and basketball games, and expanding the band’s reach and reputation throughout the region.

Douglas McCullough

Assistant Director of Bands

Douglas L. McCullough is Assistant Director of Athletic Bands and Director of Marching Percussion at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. Additionally Douglas is the Director of Marching Percussion.

The homecoming committee organizes all the activities that are traditions of BOTHA during the annual University of Miami Alumni Homecoming Weekend that includes Induction of the new class of Hall of Fame, Alumni participation in the Parade, Pep Rally and Boat Burning and Alumni band at the homecoming game.

Communications and Social Media Chair

The communications and social media committee prepares and distributes all official communications on behalf of the Band of the Hour Association including the quarterly newsletter and this website. The chair also serves as the liaison with the UMAA to promote the activities of the BOTHA and UM Frost School Band of the Hour via social media outreach on Facebook and other channels.

Hall of Fame Chair

Hall of Fame was created to honor outstanding contribution to the University of Miami Band of the Hour. The inaugural Class of 1994 jump started a great tradition at the University of Miami. Members of the Hall include Miami Fight song composer's, a U.S Congressman, a current Trustee of the University, and former band members. This distinct group of people stand for the tradition and history of the Band of the Hour.
